Moymo for Windows

Clips and screenshots

The Clips and screenshots add-on is two things: a place that shows your clips and screenshots, and a recorder that keeps the last minute or so of your screen so that a key press can turn it into a clip.

Install it from the Modules page.

Your clips

The Clips place lists the clips and screenshots on your PC, including those from other recorders (it reads Medal's library and thumbnails, for example). You can:

  • Open a clip in the built-in player. Clips recorded as HEVC (which Windows cannot always play) are converted for playback automatically the first time you open them.
  • Select several (Ctrl or Shift) and delete them.
  • Edit a clip: trim, crop, mute individual sound tracks (a clip can carry several: game, Discord, microphone), and export it.
  • Make a copy small enough for Discord (under 20 MB), put it on the clipboard and open Discord.

The recorder

The recorder is off until you turn it on, and costs nothing while it is off. Everything is local: a recording is a file on your PC; nothing is uploaded, counted or reported.

When it is on, it records the screen you chose into a rolling buffer of short pieces (older ones are deleted as it goes, and the buffer is emptied when the recording stops, when it starts, and when the program starts). A key (one you choose) saves the last stretch as a clip; another key takes a screenshot. A small note says "clipped by Moymo".

What it records

  • Video at up to 60 frames a second, Full HD by default (a larger screen is scaled down; that is the one setting that can cost real processor time).
  • Separate sound tracks: the game or system sound (without Discord), Discord (when it is running), and your microphone, so that you can mute any of them in the editor afterwards.
  • It works on any screen, not only in games.

The hardware does the work

Video is encoded by your graphics card (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel) where it can: on an NVIDIA card the picture never leaves the card, and the recorder uses a few percent of one processor core. The program asks your machine which encoder works rather than assuming, and sets aside one that fails.

The ffmpeg component

Recording uses ffmpeg, a free open-source tool, downloaded once (about 65 MB) the first time you switch the recorder on. It is checked against a hash compiled into the program, kept in the add-on's folder, and also used by Moymo Link and for playing HEVC clips.

Privacy

A clip is a file you made. Moymo never sees it unless you share it. The recorder does not send what is on your screen anywhere.
