Channels and roles
Channels
A channel is one place to talk. Channels sit in categories, which are folders you can fold shut.
| Kind | For |
|---|---|
| Text | Messages, files, games, polls, giveaways |
| Voice | Talking, camera, sharing a screen |
| Forum | One thread per post, with tags |
| To-do list | Rows people tick off |
| Document | A page several people write in together |
| Calendar | Events, with Going / Maybe / Can't |
| Party board | "Who wants to play?" calls with places |
| Gallery | A wall of pictures, GIFs and clips |
Make one with + beside a category, Create channel, choose the kind, give it a name (an emoji in a name is fine), and, if you like, make it private. Channels can be moved, renamed and deleted by people with Manage Channels.
Messages
Up to 4000 characters. A little formatting is drawn for you: **bold**, *italic*, ~~strike~~, `code`, fenced code blocks, and links.
- Mention a person with
@name, a role with@role(if it is mentionable), everybody with@everyoneand everybody online with@here. A person who cannot see the channel is not named. A mention makes a note for them. - Reply to a message; react with any emoji or a server emoji; pin (up to 50 per channel); edit and delete your own.
- Files up to 100 MB, 10 to a message. Pictures, GIFs, videos and audio are shown in the message, not downloaded. Programs are never accepted.
- Games: send a game as a card.
- Polls and giveaways: see Rooms.
- Server emoji: a server can have its own, used as
:name~code:(the picker inserts it for you). - Links to a page get a small preview card.
Choose the + at the right of the message box to upload a file, send a game, make a poll or a giveaway (each only if you may).
Roles
A role is a named set of permissions. Everyone has the @everyone role; people can hold more. A role has a name, a colour, and options:
- Hoist: members with it are listed separately in the member list.
- Mentionable: anyone may mention it.
- With the right perks: an icon and a style for its colour (gradient, shimmer, glow). See Sparks and perks.
Roles form a ladder: a member can only act on people and roles below their own highest role, and can only give permissions they hold themselves. The owner has everything.
Permissions
A member's permissions are the sum of every role they hold plus @everyone. Permissions fall in groups:
| Group | Permissions |
|---|---|
| Everyday | View channel, Send messages, Read history, Add reactions, Mention @everyone, Manage messages, Attach files, Embed games, Create invite, Change nickname |
| Voice | Connect, Speak, Mute members, Move members, Go live (Stream), React over a stream |
| Running the server | Manage channels, Manage roles, Manage server, Kick, Ban, Manage nicknames, Moderate members (time-outs), Administrator |
| Rooms | Create posts, Manage posts, To-do add / check / edit / manage, Document edit / manage, Create polls, Create giveaways, Create events, Manage events, Create parties, Manage parties |
Administrator means everything, in every channel, ignoring overwrites. The exact bits are in Permission bits.
Channel overwrites
A channel (or a category) can allow or deny permissions for a role or a person. The order is: the category's overwrites first, then the channel's own, each in the order @everyone, then the person's roles, then the person. A permission that is denied is taken away, one that is allowed is given. A member who cannot view a channel can do nothing in it, and does not see it in the list.
A private channel is just a channel where @everyone is denied View channel and some roles or people are allowed it.
Common recipes
- A read-only announcements channel: deny @everyone Send messages in the channel; allow it to a Moderator role.
- A members-only channel: deny @everyone View channel; allow it to a Member role.
- A quiet voice channel: deny @everyone Speak; allow it to Speaker. People who join without Speak join muted.
- A bot that only posts in one place: give its role no Send messages at the server level and allow it in that channel with an overwrite.
