Bots in your server
A bot is a member of a server that a program, not a person, controls. Developers make them with the Developer Portal, and a bot can be added to your server by someone who manages it.
Recognising a bot
A bot has a BOT tag wherever its name is drawn. It cannot sign in to Moymo, has no profile page, and is on no list outside the servers it is in.
Adding one
You need the Manage Server permission (the owner always has it). The bot's developer gives you a link. Open it, and Moymo shows:
- what the app is: its name, picture, summary and who made it, and its verified domain if it has one;
- a server picker: the servers where you can add bots;
- the permissions it asks for, as checkboxes. Untick anything it does not need.
Choose Authorise. The bot joins as a member with a role of its own, named after the app, holding exactly the permissions you left ticked. The role sits just below your highest role, so a bot never outranks the person who added it. You can only give a bot permissions you hold yourself.
Check before you add
A bot is a program someone else wrote. Give it the fewest permissions it needs, never Administrator unless you trust the developer completely, and prefer apps that show a verified domain and a privacy policy.
If the server has a notices channel for joins, a line says that the bot was added, and by whom.
Managing a bot
- Its role is managed by the app: only adding the bot again (with other permissions) changes it. You can allow or deny the bot in individual channels with overwrites, like any member.
- Kick it from its member card, or ban it, to remove it.
- The role stays in the list after the bot is gone; delete it if you like.
What a bot can see
A bot sees what a member in its place would: the channels its permissions allow. Encrypted channels cannot be read by a bot at all.
Bots that need more
Some bots also ask you to continue with Moymo on their own site, to share your username, picture or servers with them. That is a separate thing: you see exactly what it asks, and you can take it back any time in Settings > Connected apps. See Your account.
Build your own
See the developer docs, and switch on Developer mode in Servers to copy ids.
